Academic Works of Shin, Yong-Ha: Principles and Achievements

This essay is a general review on the academic achievements by professor Shin Yong-Ha. He has acquired extensive list of publications on Korean social history, Korean independent movement, Korean modernization, Dokdo Island issues and the history of Old Joseon. Four distinctive aspects of his academic career are addressed. Firstly he has always kept the principle of Silsagusi (finding the real and aiming the right) while researching. His works include plenty of footnotes and references not only from the diverse disciplines but also from the diverse countries. In that respect, he seeks to bring together the idea of the Sillhak intellectuals of Joseon Dynasty with the positivist sociology of A. Comte. Secondly, he has maintained strong and well-regulated passions on national sovereignty, democratic value and scientific civilization. Thirdly, he stressed the importance of independent theorization in academia of the non-Western societies. For him, scholarly works should strive to develop an independent spirit of society instead of merely accepting knowledge from more advanced societies. Finally, he always respected the academic society as a community in which individual scholars could be educated and reproduced. Under his academic leadership, institutional foundations for researches such as social history, independent movement, and Dokdo Island successfully developed.

Shin Yong-Ha is a representative sociologist in Korea. His study is generally called 'sociology of nation' because he has been doing research on Korean nation within the framework of sociology during life. This article covers the outline, peculiarities and issues on his 'sociology of nation'. According to his theory of nation-building, Korean nation is not a modern outcome unlike the 'nation-state' in western history, but an obvious reality leading to the ancient or primitive society in Korean history. This new and alternative perspective of nation is especially useful for the study of Third-world countries because those societies have had their own identities and concepts of nation distinct from those of western societies. Shin has been doing his unique research not on abstract/a-priori dimension but empirical footing based on the archaeological and anthropological evidences. Shin's 'sociology of nation' consists of normative expectation, autonomous recollection/introspection and strict/empirical verification for Korean nation. Definitely, it is a valuable classic of Korean sociology and huge gateway unavoidable for those who are interested in nation and nation-related issues in the field of sociology.

The time of artificial intelligence has begun already in our daily life. It's obvious that artificial intelligence will affect tremendously to our life and society. Artificial intelligence will cause big change in family life, too. But the direction of change depends on the choice of human being. In this paper, we will seek how Confucian thoughts can contribute to the wise choice of human being. What is family? If family can't contribute to happy life of family members, it is meaningless. Therefore, we need the innovation of the concept of family. In the time of artificial intelligence, how Confucian thoughts can contribute to the innovation of the concept of family? This is the main question of this paper.

Isn’t the Family Unjust?

The studies of familes in Korea since 1980’s have focused on the valueless of the family rather than on its values, and have approached it in terms of critical, dysfuncTional perspectives. The tendency may be called justice perspective, which has added up from the viewpoint explaining human beings only as independent and autonomous being and analizing whether the family is just and equal or not. The studies have contributed to explore the discrimination and suppression in the family, but brought about the tendency denying The value of the family. Human beings need caring due to their biological limits and also have lived more as relational beings than as independent beings. This means there are to be morals or virtues as well as justice to live out the condtions of the human beings. Thus, the value of the family is to be examined in terms of morals and its functions to cover the limitations of human beings. Historically the family have supplemented the biological limits and satisfied emotional needs of human beings. The family also have functioned as the basis for morals. The family is the basis for reproductions and morals, which is to be consideraTed in the analysis of the family. Reproductions and the basis for morals are the virtues of the family, and family policies are needed to pull the long-term functions of the family into the policies.

A New Approach in Korean Family Studies: the Life Course Perspective

This paper aims to search for a new approach in Korean family studies; the life course perspective. The Korean family studies analyzed a family as a collective group, rarely addressing a family member within. An individual within a family was considered to be invisible and ignored. ‘Individualization’ in Korea, which started in the late 1990s has helped ‘a family member’ or ‘individual’ in a strong patilineal kinship to discover one’s new self/identity apart from the collective family structure and to make a choice on one’s free will. As a result, there are the surprisingly varied untraditional family forms: divorced, remarriaged, single-parent, or dual income families. The Korean family studies are situated in the context of what is often referred to as a ‘family change’ or ‘family crisis’. This study suggests that the Korean family studies should address an individual within a family, utilizing the life course perspective in order to understand the rapidly changing Korean families. The life course perspective, also known as the life course approach, refers to an approach for analyzing people's lives within structural, social, and cultural contexts. In this approach, the family is a collection of individuals with shared history who interact within ever-changing social contexts across ever increasing time and space (Bengtson and Allen 1993: 470). Adopting the life course perspective will shed a light on the Korean family studies which exclusively considered a family as a fixed and collective group, ignoring individuals within. This article suggests that the Korean studies with the life course approach could better understand the change of Korean family where individuals interact influenced by social/historical contexts. Lastly, this study presented a few examples of the Korean family studies with the life course perspective for the future research implication.

Lao-Ze and the Design of After-modern Education

This thesis aims to design the after-modern education from the idea of Lao-ze. The after-modern education can be distinguished from modern education by the demolition of skin-boundary by which the modern education can make the skin-encapsuled ego. When the skin-boundary was disappeared then the nature of the children began to appear. The after-modern education can be established by un-doing(無爲) that is not mean doing nothing but doing something without intention. The doing without intention is the key word for the after-modern education. By doing without intention the children can reach to the knowing-nothing(無知) that doesn't mean the ignorance but the freedom from the knowledge. By the freedom from the knowledge the children can experience the Self(참나).

This paper was analyzed the ideas and activities of the monk JeongMu. Then, this paper was examined the possibilities of character education based on the Buddhist character theory. As the absence of character raised as the causes of social problems, the importance of the character education is emphasized. Unfortunately there is a lack of the clear theoretical understanding about the character and is hard to find the systematic training program. In the critical mind, the heart[心] of the traditional ideas, such as Confucianism and Buddhism are being revisited. But the practical discussion on how that can be utilized in the actual training is not enough. In this context, I have an interest in the monk JeongMu who claimed the recovery of the character based on the Filial piety and practiced the training programs. The contents to apply to the character training program abound in JeongMu’s Buddhist sermons and the Buddhist layman targeted program. This has been introduced in Korean society through the media. But, the efforts to succession and the efforts to understand more deeply were scarce. It is also noted this. The gratitude that JeongMu emphasized and the Buddhist layman targeted teaching method will help to configure the character education into a more positive direction.

Filial Piety and the Love of Parents, Post-modern Generation Ethics, and Welfare of the Aged

Unhappiness of the aged reaches to very serious level. Therefore, investigation of 'the world where the aged is happy' become an important task of sociology. The purpose of this paper is looking for the world where the aged is happy. The key words are filial piety, love of parents, post-modern generation ethics, and welfare for the aged. We will show that the fundamental cause of unhappiness of the aged is the modern view of the aged. And we will discuss based on the post-modern view of the aged. The point of this paper is as follows. There is two kinds of filial piety. The pre-modern filial piety and the post-modern filial piety are those. Only the post-modern filial piety can be expanded to 'the post-modern generation ethics 1' which means the respect of the young to the aged. And 'the post-modern generation ethics 1' can complete the welfare to the aged. There is two kinds of the love of parents. The modern love of parents and the post-modern love of parents are those. Only the post-modern love of parents can be expanded to 'the post-modern generation ethics 2' which means the love of the aged to the young. And 'the post-modern generation ethics 2' can realize the welfare by the aged.

The Effect of Religion on Life Satisfaction among Korean Older Adults: Focusing on Mediation Effect of Depression

The purpose of this study is to examine whether certain religions affect depression and life satisfaction compared to having no-religion and whether depression mediates between the religions and life satisfaction among older Korean adults. Also, it attempts to explore for which religion the frequency in participating in religious meetings affects depression and life satisfaction and whether depression mediates between the frequency and life satisfaction. To achieve this purpose, the study used the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), wave 4 conducted in 2012. It selected participants aged 65 and over from wave 4 so that the total number of cases was 4,015 persons (no-religion 1,924, Protestant 854, Catholic 355, Buddhist 882). To analyze the data, descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis was utilized. Results are as follows. First, only Buddhism was statistically significant in affecting depression and life satisfaction and depression mediated between Buddhism and life satisfaction compared to having no-religion. Secondly, depression and life satisfaction of Protestant group was statistically significantly affected by the frequency of participation in religious meetings and depression mediated between the frequency and life satisfaction. In conclusion, the study suggested that religious group meetings should be more frequent and regular in Buddhism in order to reduce depression and increase life satisfaction.

Inequality of Academic Ecosystem through the Analysis of Researcher-Journal Network: Case of Sociology in Korea

The academic field of social science in South Korea has formed societies around research fields or topics since the 1980s, publishing journals to present their research findings. Of them, the Korea Research Foundation started the "project of supporting journal publication" in 1991 and the "registration system for journals" in 1998, leading the changes and growth of academic ecosystem. In 2014, the National Research Foundation of Korea announced a "plan for the improved registration system for journals," which has been criticized for not reflecting the reality of academic ecosystem even though it is expected to have huge influences on the major academic ecosystems of South Korea including sociology. This study focused on the journals and main authors whose importance had been rising in recent years among the diversified agents of academic ecosystem to examine the structures and characteristics of academic ecosystem. The study first established a "journal-researcher network" and analyzed it based on the "Korea Citation Index" by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The major findings were as follows: first, the sociological ecosystem of South Korea showed a power law distribution in which a small number of researchers conducted a large number of researches. Second, it consisted of the center, margin, and independent sector. Third, there were differences in academic expandability among the different disciplines within it. This result means that the academic ecosystem centered the researcher-journal network exists in unequal conditions. The study also identified the following potential problems with the application of "plan for the improved registration system for journals" by the National Research Foundation of Korea to the academic field of sociology in the nation: first, the academic classification of National Research Foundation of Korea did not reflect the actual sociological ecosystem; secondly, the improvement plan lacked in consideration for the differences in expandability among the different disciplines; and finally, the KCI was not a proper tool to assess journals.
